En-suite

So - I'm looking at tile options for the en-suite...

I like this ( option A ) flat white tile.

And - this ( option B ) beveled edge tile.

Tiles will be going up onto the wall behide the basins.

BUT - which option should I go for?

I'm also thinking that I want plain frameless mirrors, as in the image above?

Mirrors will be cut to size, same width as the basin? And - the same length as the wall lights below?

These are the wall lights I LOVE!

I'm thinking 2 for each basin? one on either side of the mirror? They measure 160cm in length! Which means they will fill the space in from the top of the basin to the picture rail above.

As the tiles are cold and hard in the way they look and feel and the wall lights are industrial in design, I'm also thinking that I may need to soften/add texture with ornate cornicing - picture below?

  1. Yes to the cornice, YES to the lights. I think you need to get some boards with some sample tiles stuck on them to try out in the space, find out how the light hits them, does the visual activity of all those bevels draw too much attention or is it needed texture for the walls.Even thought that mirror is frameless, i think it has a narrow metal channel frame, which makes it look more finished, and if it were chrome, it would tie in nicely with the new light fixtures

    1. Hello Lisa,

Your right...I should get some boards with samples stuck on them! It will hopefully make the decision process a little easier.

And - yes to the mirror suggestion!

  3. You might regret using a flat mirror. I have a flat mirror and a deep sink. The mirror is about 5 inches too far away. It's uncomfortable to lean in (sometimes you need to get in close to the mirror). If you look in your mood photo above, the sink looks very shallow. Your sinks are classic.

Try a simple tilting mirror instead.

  4. It is hard to fail with subway tiles. I think they might fit the traditional bones of your home better than wallpaper (comment on previous post). Herringbone is nice (previous post), but I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer the classic pattern and tiles - no bevels. Gray grout is a little softer than black while still giving definition. Maybe a big vintage mirror and a kilim or a seagrass rug would be a warm contrast. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

    1. Looks like I'm going with the flat white tile and grey grout!

And - If I don't run with this wall light, I was thinking about using miss matched antique mirrors - I LOVE this one...http://www.hemswell-antiques.com/antiques/stunning-french-napoleon-iii-gilded-mirror-24000.html

    1. this space doesnt strike me as a guido palace. And in my opinion, do you know what I think when I see grey grout?...... I pussied out and didnt have the balls to do a black grout.

    3. Look, just because someone called your ass out and now you feel like a tool bc your own personal bathroom most likely has those stupid mirror subway tiles you suggested, and now every time you walk into it , you think to yourself "Damn, this really does look like a bathroom from Miami Vice.....why did I do this" theres no need to get your panties in a bunch about it up here on this guys blog. Who in there right mind would want mirrored subway tiles? Well, clearly you would, but that most likely because it goes so well with the rest of your decor, which, if I had to guess, is comprised mainly of fake plants, and black laquer furniture. You probably have a framed poster of a 1985 Lamborghini Countach over your waterbed too.

This place is pretty tastefully done, I admire his style. But if I came back and saw mirrored tiles, Id think cheese. If I saw regular classic tile with some bitchin detail, Id be clapping. It belongs there. In the end, its not my space, nor my decision, but Im sure whatever the owner opts for, it will be fitting.

And my name? You can call me Helmut

  7. I like the idea of the flat subway tiles with gray grout. I also just had an idea. What about Thinbrick, which would create the look of a brick wall. Then paint it white. It would be unexpected. But, on second thought, the subway tiles is probably a safer way to go.
